The start of day 7 was a rough one. It takes a few miles to get going in the morning, but today it was all uphill. Starting right from our motel where we stayed with Ang and Aspen it was steady climbing for about the first 8 miles. That was a little hard on us.
Once we reached Cadillac MI, we were able to get on another long rails-to-trails system and that made a huge difference. No more hills. – Oh – and on a side note, the north side of Cadillac is one of the worse places for biking we have ever rode. Avoid that place on a bike.
At the end of the day we met up with our host family for the night, Darin and Marcia from WarmShowers.com. WarmShowers is a website for cyclists to host other cyclists when they are traveling. You can open your house up to bikers looking for a place to stay when they are in your area and others are willing to help you out when you are in their area.
We met up with Darin and Marcia in Reed City and they put us up in their basement on a bed and a pull out couch. We were also there on a day with another cyclist, Adam, that was traveling from London Ontario to San Diego Ca. They also fed us with a huge meal with Salad, Brats, Burgers, Cheesy Potatoes, Beans, Asparagus, Rolls, etc.
We stayed up late with Adam and Darin chatting about cycling and touring and more. Darin is doing a 2700 miles race on the continental divide trail next month and Adam is on his second tour after doing Europe a couple years ago. Marcia has also recently done the Pacific Coast Highway. So it was a great chance to share stories and talk about trips and technology.
